Land for the Salem Baptist Church was donated by Naomih J. Peters of Lawrence County, Alabama. It was part of the Richard Peters headright survey. This is recorded in Register Record Book Y, pages 188 & 189 signed 07-DEC-1872.
It is thought that the cemetery by the church was started when Martha Amanda McWilliams Simmons died. The church was across the road from where it now stands. Three fourths of an acre was donated for the cemetery by her parents, A. E. & Rachel. "Callie" McWilliams. Martha was the first wife of Ike Simmons. Joseph Anthony donated the new part of the cemetery by the church where it stands now in 1928. Doris Virginia Simmons Frame, daughter of Vera & Ray Simmons and granddaughter of Joseph Anthony was given control of the new cemetery. She sold
lots and the money went into the cemetery fund. W. H. Cupp owns the land from the south gate on south side and sells lots in their part of the cemetery.
This first section is the old part of the cemetery that is across the road from the Salem Baptist Church.
The oldest known grave;
SIMMONS Mattie McWilliams 12-FEB-1871 11-JUL-1891
